Life and Art

Earlier this month, Karen from the Selvage blog asked her readers to share about idea sources.  It got me thinking about where I get my inspiration from. I get ideas from so many different places, daily life, poignant memories, seasonal images like flowers in my garden, family celebrations, graphic designs, fine art, blog posts, google photos, as well as other quilts at shows and exhibitions. Inspiration is everywhere. My problem has been how to store and retrieve it.

My camera helps me to capture these fleeting images and hold them steady so that I can ponder them. The limited frame helps me focus, often allowing me to see things that I missed the first time. But I found it difficult to keep track of all the digital photos. Usually my ideas need to percolate. I like to compare the natural images with art and see how other people in different times and places have responded to similar themes. For years I've struggled to collect all these scattered images in one easy to find place. What I really needed was a virtual design board.

Then I discovered pinterest. At first it was fun just collecting and sorting images. Then I realised that my pinterest boards had become, in actual fact, my quilt design boards, the perfect place to group all sorts of images around common themes. Everything was coming together in one accessible place on the pinterest design boards. Some of my pinterest boards are just for fun but many of them are quilts waiting to happen. Now my ideas have a home.

Focus

Life is like a camera.
Focus on what's important.
Capture the good times.
Develop from the negatives.
And if things don't work out
Take another shot.

Peacock Feathers

I love how machine quilting designs morph between one person and the next.           I found this fab line design from Patsy Thompson on pinterest the other day. I just had to doodle it,  and when I did, the design turned out like this.

The kids decided that my version looked like
peacock feathers.

And it did!   The JUKI TL98-P sewing machine needle is the perfect 'pen' to draw the feathers. The 6 foot Art Quilter frame holds the 'paper' (black fabric quilt sandwich) steady and perfectly tensioned. This leaves me free to concentrate on drawing with gorgeous variegated thread....it's so fun drawing a line that changes colour!

#836 from Superior Threads.

I'm not sure how I'm going to use this new line design. But I'm looking for the opportunity and pinterest is certainly giving me lots of inspiration.

Pinteresting

It's been a very pinteresting day! Before this morning I had no idea what it was. But today I stumbled upon pinterest and decided to find our a bit more. Now I'm hooked!

Pinterest is a virtual 'pinboard'. It's an easy way to organize and share cool things that you find on the web. And then you can see what other people are finding and how they like to arrange the images. I've only just got my toes wet today, so to speak, but I decided to post about it anyway, just to show how easy it is to get going. You'll be able to watch my progress as I begin to get a better idea of how it works.

I love how the pages from this 'book mobile' look like quilted feathers. Here one image perfectly combines two of the great loves of my life; reading and quilting. The pages create such gorgeous feather shapes. It makes me want to re-create the pattern doodled on paper and quilted on my machine quilting frame. I am inspired!

Here's another neat image. What a brilliant thing to do with my button collection! I am definitely going to make this!

One last image. I have to include it because it is iconic. It would be difficult to find a more pinteresting mascot!
